Pioneer Village...a new home!
We visited Pioneer Village at Caesar Creek for the first time back in February for the Maple Syrup Festival.
It was enchanting and appealed to the outdoor loving, pioneer character in many of us. We have attended some work days and other festivals there since then, but today was our first day as part of the cast of volunteers. We get to help with the events there once a month now. The younger four kids and I help in the school house, teaching about and doing activities about what education was like on the frontier in the 1804 time period. Today we taught about writing on slates and The New England Primer they used then. It was so much fun for us. Ironically we don't have any pictures of us working in the school house. We were too busy with the visitors that came through to take pictures, but these are our other adventures.
We learned about leatherwork in our down time at the school. The schoolmaster Randy helped us make a pouch for Brett to carry his marbles in. Brett loved it, but because it looked just like the pouch Izzy has on Jake and the Neverland Pirates, he dumped the marbles and filled it with small rocks which he said was pixie dust. I loved it! So much for period-correct imagination! Randy also taught the kids to make this period-style game. Brinnley sewed the one Bryce is playing with here.
I loved this picture of our happy baby with his pouch of pixie dust. Evidently it really worked because he was flying!

The kids also helped in Ms. Patty's cabin and made tallow candles and played with fire :-).
What beautiful girls! This is the scale barn behind the school house. It is where they used to weigh the wagons that were going to sell things. It is so beautiful! The kids love to play on the rope swings back there.

Doesn't it just make you say "Awwww...that kids is so cute!"
Brooke was such a grown-up girl in all she did to learn and help today. These kids were really in their element here at the Village!
This picture just shows his personality. He thinks he can just do anything the big kids can even though he is only 2!
It may have something to do with the encouragement he gets from this guy!
You can see why we love this place so much! We were there for 8 hours today and we were sad to see it end. Next month is the Native American Gathering and we get to do more at the school house with pioneer games and toys. It is neat to be a part of the heritage in this community and have kids who love it so much too!
