Warrior Focus--PRESS Forward to Christ

I haven't written much about the Eternal Warriors training Todd and I did in the fall.  It is an amazing program that has been very influential in my life and in our family's efforts to live the gospel more fully.  The Lord also used that training to inspire the theme for our Stake Girls' Camp this coming summer--"Press Forward Army of Shelaman."  This theme combines the warrior focus with the 2016 theme of the Church to "Press Forward."  The Eternal Warriors program emphasizes daily intentional goal setting.  In connection with the YW theme this year, we created a daily goal setting program similar to EW based on the PRESS Forward acronym.

P
--Pray
R--Read
E--Enrich (developing my own talents and gifts)
S--Serve
S--Strategize ("What am I fighting for?" "What is Satan's strategy against me today?" "What is my battle plan?"
Forward--Under the direction of the Spirit--What does God need me to do TODAY?

This morning I was doing some gospel study about these aspects of being a warrior and was led to Elder Pearson's April 2015 conference talk called, "Stay By The Tree."  I highly recommend re-reading that talk!  He said:

“We can fill our lives with accomplishment and well-doing, but in the end, if we do not enter into sacred covenants to follow Christ and faithfully keep them, we will have utterly and completely missed the mark.”

This was a great reminder to me that the goals and the warrior focus are important, but if they become the center of what I am doing, I will miss the mark.  In my own battle, and in training these young women and my own children, I must learn to powerfully answer the question, "What am I fighting for?"  AND, even more importantly I must first answer the question, "WHO am I fighting for?"  Every motivation and every goal must point me back to Christ, or in the end I will fall.  I thought of the New Testament story of the rich young man who came to Jesus.  He was confident that he was DOING all of the things that made him righteous.  He must have been at day 128 or something with his goals :-), but Christ teaches him a powerful lesson.  He invites the young man to enter into a relationship with him--to release the things that have defined him so far (his riches and achievements) and follow Christ.  That is the battle.  Letting the journey WITH CHRIST be the focus.  Because of this I, I think I want to add a nightly reflection question of how the goals and the daily battle has brought me closer to Christ--how I sought and felt His influence that day.

How do you focus on Christ in this wonderful adventure?  How do you help others you are encouraging stay centered on that? I would love your input!

  1. As I was thinking this over and considering my own position on my journey (WITH Him or TO him... or both), the story of Mary and Martha was more applicable to me than the story of the rich man. I want desperately to be with him and have everything ready for him that I get distracted and lose sight of really being with Him when He's already so close. Too many 'doings' can cloud my "feelings/seeings/hearings." But to keep in mind the WHY will help me with that, I think. Thanks again for sharing this!
